Ask a Geneticist (science)

From the article on chimpanzees chromosones vs human chromosones, I found it very interesting that chimpanzees, closest species to us, have 48 chromosones while we have 46 chromosones. The more closely related species generally have around the same number of chromosones. Furthermore I found it amazing how 5 million years ago chimpanzees and humans started out with exactly the same number of chromosones. However I don't quite understand how exactly humans and chimpanzees just evolved and ended up having different amounts of chromosones. I also learned that some of the simplest organisms have all theirDNA in one chromosone, such as bacteria, where as more intricate organisms divide their DNA into several different chromosones, for instance humans. In addition the differences between any two peoples DNA is on average 6 million.
